The economic disaster has caused many to let their animals go - either leave them outside their homes to fend for themselves or worse, take them to the shelter for almost certain death.

SCA was successful in garnering publicity on this crisis. We want to thank the media for their swift and intelligent choice to promote adoption and reveal the number of animals killed needlessly in the shelters. SCA's Board member, Missy Woodward, was quoted on the front of the DailyNews article by Dana Bartholomew.

Now with the California state budget even slashed more drastically, the hold time in shelters has been reduced from 6-7 days to 72 hours. This means that shelters may choose to keep animals longer than the 72 hours, but they will not be reimbursed for that time as before.

Please tell others the time is now to adopt. If you ever thought of adopting an animal, please go now. Deaths are mounting daily and the animals need you...especially in kitten and puppy season. Spay/Neuter is the ONLY solution. Promote this wherever you can. There are several low cost options available. Contact the LA Animal Services and local rescue groups for more information.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Pit Bull Blues - a new music video

John Shipe has created a fabulous song, 'Pit Bull Blues', detailing the myths of pit bulls and their personality. Many humane groups kept the Beverly Hills City Council up until almost 2 a.m. on Tuesday night...er... morning. Check out the AnimalNews.info video where I reported on this - #63 most discussed topic in Pets and Animals on YouTube.

I have a VERY old, arthritic feral in a trap outside ready to return him to his colony. He has no teeth and is trying to be mean...but sadly can barely even move in the cage. I am harassed and my license is taken whenever I feed a small group of kitties who are mostly all TNR'd (Trap, Neuter and Return). She decided to make a difference just at her local shelter by gathering blankets and towels from friends and give them to the animals so they are more comfortable in their cages or runs. Amazingly, this idea blossomed by generous donations that would not end. Soon she was giving out blankets, towels and even toys to LA's six shelters. As the animals soil them and often tear them up from frustration, there is a constant need for thee items. As it has been documented, animals with towels and bedding appear more adoptable...mainly because they are more comforted than lying on a cold cement floor or wire cage with newspaper. No problem for this animal crusader, Eileen kept putting out the word to stores, organizations, individuals and even going to schools educating children. And the donations came flowing in...literally in truckloads. She soon had to branch out to county shelters and non-profits. She says it's like Santa bringing in bags and bags of gifts. The shelter workers are so amazed and cannot believe the endless supply she keeps bringing. It's truly a gift of love that keeps on giving. The animals benefit and so do the children that learn about the plight of overpopulation at our shelters. Field trips also assist in the education process and the kids love to see that their blanket drives make a difference to the animals. Eileen is branching out to receiving food and toys for animals as well. Her dream? Best Friends opened the event to many rescue groups as well so every group in the City of LA was allowed to show their precious pooches and pussycats to potential pet guardians. What a success it was in the cat area for me as a first time LAAS volunteer. I had so much fun showing off the kitties and finding the right matches. Some are shown here. Best news, every cat left to either a home or a rescue group - yeah for the kitties!

My interview with Ed Boks, General Manager of LA Animal Services, and Heidi Hubner, Director of Volunteer Services is informative and explains how YOU can make a difference and help at a Mobile Pet Adoptions to get animals out of the shelters and into the loving arms of families across the Southland. Over 90+ volunteers helped out...even Starbucks' employees left their java and made it a day for the animals. Check out some great photos of the day's festivities. I made friends and learned many things about cats...which I didn't know even being the mom of a crazy brood of three knuckleheads. You never learn everything about animals and this is a great opportunity to learn and comfort these sentient beings that are just coming out of a stressful situation, such as living on the streets and being put in a shelter. You are needed to help them shine and show well so potential adopters will see their best side. And as we all know, shelter animals make the BEST pets...I know, I have had many.

Make a difference - VOLUNTEER at LA Animal Services or any number of rescue groups across the nation.

Learn more about Critter Crusades and our shows to highlight the world of animal rescue!

Spay and Neuter!
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Homeopathic Kitties

Well, the kitties had quite the excursion going to see Dr. John - John O as I call him - the genious doctor of homeopathy and naturopathy. They started the day on the picnic benches in cages under the lemon trees filled with birds. Then, to their surprise...and mine...they were then taken to his new "examining room". Actually it was his converted garage/laboratory. All white, nice tables, examining table with of course a window overlooking a beautiful bougenvilla (sp?) bush. It was truly quite a change from the sterile and scary vets' office scenarios. The cats all roamed around sniffing everything in sight and then would sit with John as he would gently touch, gaze, inspect and even hug them one by one.

What if all of us could have such caring treatment ...to health....not illness? What a change we would have. Lots of laughter, instruction on the healing process and diagnosis of 'personality' versus disease. It is such a fascinating process and I highly recommend this to the basic shots and blood tests. So much diagnostic work can be done now and the chances of preventing disease are very high when an animals state of being is balanced. We should ALL be doing this for ourselves.

John helped my dear Astro live to 15 and I am so grateful. He always called him "the Captain" as he would run around his yard and the construction site as it was for over 1.5 years. H did a complete remake of a little shanty into a huge two storied home and then lab/exam facility. All this in his retirement years. After working on 75,000 race horses and then thousands of animals he is getting weary...but happy newly married and enjoying the good life he deserves for sharing his knowledge and love to all our animals. I am so blessed to have him on my 'medical' team. I dare say the kitties won't mind another visit!

Check out new shows on my site Critter Crusades
Everything pawsitive about animals...

A New Year for the Animals

Happy New Year! Will it be for the animals of Los Angeles in the shelter systems? There is such hope with a new General Manager in place who expresses ideas that could be taken from the mouth of a rescue organization. But can it be achieved in the bureaucratic system of LA with union workers and apathy amongst council and city officials? Now is the time to see if LA can become the example for all cities to follow for a No Kill system of animal shelters.

Everyone has to be involved, everyone has to be patient, everyone has to keep helping the animals as though it will not happen as everything takes time. New policies and procedures need to be implemented, laws followed, new proposals developed the money to make it all happen.

We need to stay positive and hopeful for a new beginning to make sure that LA lives up to its name ... the City of Angels...for the animals.

Blessings,

Missy and the cats
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Jetster aka Son O'Satan awaits a dog brother

Oh what an attitude he has!!!
Everything pawsitive about animals...

In search of a dog....

You would think it would be easy to find a rescue dog, wouldn't you? I spent the holidays crying over Astro,AGAIN,thinking I could NEVER find another dog like him. At a Christmas eve party I am online looking for a Katrina rescue dog that I thought my hosts would like, and low and behold found Astro's twin! I swear. I have looked and looked for him since late March and I find him. In San Diego of course. I have tried and tried to find out more and it's been quite difficult as one rescuer has been sick and the other...well...she gave a new meaning to 'scrutiny' to ascertain my interest in the dog. I tried to say "don't you know who I am?","if you knew all the people in LA that know me and know my pet parenting and devotion ...how dare you ask these silly questions of me?" I swear, I see why people sometimes stay away from rescue groups...as much as I hate to say that. I just felt like I was on trial in the inquisition. Finally told them to look me up on the net and see what I do for animals. Anyway, not tooting my horn, but I wanted what I wanted RIGHT THEN! And, I didn't get it! Kinda good tho...maybe I am not ready? Maybe Astro is picking the right one for me? Maybe I am trying too hard to replace him by an identical dog...and let me tell you...hard to find a match of a Newfie/Lab mix, shorter haired, big nose, Newf soulful eyes and knot on top of his head, crazy playful, sweet natured and ready for rescue. I found him tho. And, I find out he was abused - a guy broke his leg, then the woman who broke up with the guy got tired of the cast and soaked it off, then he got out and was hit by a car and rebroke the leg, then lived in concrete backyard, and the couple are having a baby and now he is in need of a home...all in 8 short months! When we found Astro in the pound at 9 months he had already had FIVE owners!! He was such a nut case, but soooooooo intelligent and no one could handle him 'cept me and my ex-beau. He was such a lover and brilliant...housetrained himself immediately. He was great with dogs, people, cats, etc. Never bothered a thing...but with a room full, and I mean FULL, of toys, he didn't have time! Then when I lost him to a break up for almost 2 years and got him back...injured of course...after the Northridge earthquake ...I never looked back. I knew then he was in my life to teach me that I could take care of a child or someone dependent ...besides myself. He was my protecter and became moreso as he aged. He didn't like dogs too much but was ball and frisbee obsessed and really wanted just me. What a wonderful feeling!!! I love being loved...by a dog too!

I say whatever God's will is I will take. It certainly would be a big change with an 8 month old. Of course, with 9 month old Son of Satan (Jetster) my black hellcat, the house will be insane anyway!! I love it!!!
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Home Kitties Home!

Three little faces eagerly welcomed me back home from Texas this afternoon. Baby ... Jet ... had not grown too much as I had expected. I believe his big growth spurt was right before I left. That's good as I had the digital camera with me and I wouldn't want to miss his special babyhood.

Mootitimu (Mamamootiti) aka Mootzie at 16 1/2 is a happy cat where she used to shun me the moment I would walk in from a trip. Literally, she was like the Amish and would see me open the door would turn around and sit and then look over her shoulder at me with disgust. That's what I LOVE about animals is their attitudes ... just like ours. Mallie would just cry alot and hide and act like she was soooooo depressed and soooo unahppy and guilt me to pieces. Now baby Jet doesn't know to be happy or mad or whatever as he just IS. He just IS and stays so in the moment. What a wonderful way to live our life, huh? I wish I could emulate him that way. Tomorrow is a defining moment for me in work. I need to remember the kitties and their defiance, their strength and their in the moment-ness. Truly, they are my inspiration. :-)
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Evacuations never end...

Long time since I've written. Amazingly since my last trip to Texas. I find that hard to believe but it's true.

Tonight I look at the news and see that my current homeland of LA is on fire with tons of animals being evacuated. Last week's hurricane Rita here in Texas caused my sister and recently operated on mother to evacuate Houston to Waco with dogs in car. She said fortunately that almost every car she saw on the way on that Wednesday was full of dogs. I hope the cats, birds and other beasts were considered as well.

The Katrina nightmare still haunts us all and who knows what will occur there and what will be found. Fabulous groups such as HSUS, ASPCA, E.A.R.S., Helen Woodward group, New Leash on Life, Muchlove.org and soooo many others are just the most amazing folks.

It appears that there will be no end to the suffering for these darling creatures. What we have to focus on is the good that IS occuring and what is being done and the hero humans. I went to stores today to lose myself from the stories and find that there are kiosks and stores that cater to those that love animals. There are so many of us and we have to keep that going ... and make others more aware of the plight of those less fortunate.

Do I believe that it can all be cured soon? No, realistically, but yes in the long run. Yes in the sense that with more exposure to what is really going on can more of humanity see what happens in the lives of animals worldwide.

I hope I can be one small spark in that light that can shine on the world.

With hopeful thoughts the clock strikes midnight and I off to bed knowing the doggies in this house are sound asleep in their crated area safe from harm and my kitties in LA are safe from the fires under the wonderful care of my loving friend Shanti.

Blessings to all.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

More and more animals...

Are here around me in Waco. My brothers sweet doggies - Bo, a 2 year old yellow lab mix, and Mojo, a 6 year old, crazed shepherd/hound mix of some sort. He runs around with an American flag scarf and is obsessed with my older brother to the point that he has to stay in the car or be in someone's home when my brother is away. Separation anxiety doesn't even know such separation.

My dear bud Lynn's puppy (5 months old) which she had for only 2 weeks died suddenly of Parvo with shots and everything. She is devastated and then I realize how blessed I was with 14+ years with Astro in his 15 year life.

Another friend at a party had recently lost her 15 year old, a woman was on the side of the street with a 6 foot sign trying to give away a puppy to total strangers and another woman had a rescue and at the party was trying to get us to get a home for it. My oldest brother just rescued another kitten named FOSTER... with a bent ear. His Sebastian, orange tabby, is about 18 pounds thin! This along with all my ex riding buddies telling tales ... or should I say...tails... of their horses now, the shows they are going to, etc.

Animals, animals, animals everywhere! I see where my love of animals came from.

I am soooo blessed to have known such love and to have known so many that love animals this way.

Off to LA and my putty tats Mootzie and Malie Cat!
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Going Home...

Texas Independence Day and mom's Birthday - all on May 2nd - what a coincidence! Goin' back to Texas ... Waco more specifically... to rejuvenate and remember what's real.

I was blessed with the love of many animals in Texas - large and small. Horses, cats, dogs, gerbils, etc. Boy I was very, very lucky. My family members are on their own and all have their own broods. The legacy continues. A family that is taught to love animals grows to love animals through a lifetime. We are really just spoiled and can't stay away from that unconditional love!

I will reflect on my recent loss of Astro and think of the future.

Kind words, cards, books, etc. keep coming my way - it is SO amazing. I really don't understand it all. This dog had an amazing power to attract. He was bigger than life that's for sure.

I will read and take pen to notebook and finally write my personal feelings about this loneliness. I heard from an ex friend (that's another story) today and her words were true in the card ... there must be a space in my home that is impossible to fill.

Impossible??? i have two cats ... but right now I am ready to cleanse the front bedroom AGAIN from their pee fest. Why now? Well everyone is aging and something is going on here altogether. There is a dynamic which now is quite different without Astro. We all sleep very heavy but not happy.

I know he is here watching over us all still. I meditated today and tried to hear his voice, his mind, kiss her so very soft ears. I could feel him wanting me to move on. Then a crappy, bad, horrible day at work and you say "move on" ...to what?

More from Texas. Vaya con Dios.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Life and ....Life!

I have to remember Life is Eternal. Astro IS at Rainbow Bridge.

All around me is death or dis-ease, loss. I work in a hospital, my friend's husband had a coronary and had open heart and is on life support, my other friend is dying at my age of 47 of Picks disease with no cure and others have lost or are losing their loved ones. It's so sad ... but it's LIFE! NOT DEATH!

I think I am getting this now. I believe Astro is almost channeling new information to me about believing in living...amongst the dying or disease or discomfort. How about that. That silly doggie thought he was just a mutt ... he's a Canine Professor now!

Thank goodness I am starting to have memories of him that are making me laugh.

It has been RAINING DOWNPOURING HORRENDOUS here in LA. I remember the time ....

My ex=beau, who Astro was living with after the Northridge Earthquake in 1994, called me in a panic during a horrendous rain. He said Astro got out and the streets near the dam were all flooded. I told him to go out in the car and FIND HIM!

Well later I get the disgruntled call. This from a Greek man who no more wanted a dog in his life since everything he had was destroyed in the earthquake and the last thing he needed was a hyperactive 120 pound nut like my Astro.

Seems that Astro made it across the busiest street in the valley with trees downs, etc. to go towards Woodley Park where I used to run him. The dam is near there so all the streets are closed by the cops with the barriers. My ex goes right thru the barriers out to the park with his car just floating (old Mercedes). He looks in a far field and dontcha know ... there's Astro doing what he did best - running throught the massive fields of water splashing about having the TIME of his life!!! My ex got out, whistled and he said that Astro looked up with a HUGE grin on his face and started lunging through the raging waters towards him. At this time the police are coming to bust my ex...Astro gets to the car, they obviously see why my ex is there and then ... he has to open the back door. Astro is ready to jump in and as he opens the door the ENTIRE back seat of the car fills with water! Astro jumps in like he's in the ocean happy as can be..

The drive home allowed waters to run out all sides and besides...Astro HAD to have the windows open so it could go out there ... while more came in!!!! :-)

My ex was SOOOOO mad at me for living in a one bedroom with 3 cats, not able to take Astro off his hands. But the laugh was on me...I DID end up taking him in the one bedroom. Astro led me to my real estate fortune after that.

But THAT... is another story !!! :-)
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Healing days with dogs...

I met someone else suffering the loss of a 15 year old dog. He was the companion of the man's ex who herself suffers from ovarian cancer. Such a loss for her. We are not alone in our losses, ever. My other friend wrote me today that he just lost his sister-in-law. My sister-in-law died too of a brain tumor at 32 leaving behind a wonderful shephard mix. That dog lived with my mom until her death and she made the world of difference for my mom to get thru such a hard loss. Same for my brother too.

Why do we say "lost"? Where are they? They have not left the neighborhood, or town, or state. They didn't run away. Why do we say "lost"? Will they be "found" later? Rainbow Bridge says so.

I think there should be more education about death and truly about life's journey and passage to the "other side". There is comfort to me in knowing that life is eternal. It is a never ending journey. But it ends on this planet called earth and that's where the pain is. In "losing" the physicality of that which we love and hold so dear.

I am not alone in my pain. Others suffer too from "losing" their loved ones.

Maybe we should be more like those in New Orleans and get out the horse drawn carriage and jazz band and revel in the beautiful memories of ones we love. That TRULY is what they would want. I know that is what I want.

I have always said I wanted to be cremated and put in the pipe of a parking meter. My "tombstone saying" would simply be "Missy - EXPIRED - (Of course the meter would show the word Expired)..."She was a good kid ... but her time just ran out."

It would be on either Hollywood Boulevard or out in a cemetary where it would really get some notice.

Who knows. I am moving at such high speeds I usually think I am going to just spontaneously combust - sort of like the Tazmanian Devil.

Anyway, someone I know just got a dog with his girlfriend. He spent the last several years in prison and the look of love on his face was amazing. To come from that hell and into the days of joy that a dog brings. He was hold his buddy upside down in his arms cuddling his boy like a baby kissing him endlessly. And you call him a "criminal"? No, just someone that didn't get to love enough.

That was a healing day with a dog.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

We have to remember there's Rainbow Bridge...

in our times of loss... thank you to whoever wrote this beautiful piece.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Letting Go....

It's been quite some time since I wrote... and now I have no choice.

The love of my life...my Astro...made his transition on February 1, 2005, after a tortuous 24 hours of emergency care at three different facilities.

What do they mean when they say "he's one mass tumor of blood?" How can that be when he was actually playing with another dog just 4 days before - like a puppy almost, altho at 15 he wasn't up and moving around alot. He WAS barking and he hadn't done that forever.

I came home to a nightmarish scene that I am still trying to forget. But it's the love, the kindness, the concern, the expressions of grief from others that have helped me forget.

This has been the hardest 3 weeks of my life that I can remember. I miss my boy. My friend, my guardian, my protector, my pain in the butt when he was out of control, my silly boy, my junk yard dog, my pride and joy. He was so huge, not only in stature, but in heart. His death has touched so many people and more new people have entered into my life since his passing.

I was sent a lovely note from the Dean of UC Davis' Companion Animal program to say my vets had sent a donation in Astro's name. A beautiful Pet Grief comfort box came with lovely reminders, helpful items and grief recovery booklets to help ease the process and get me thru it. I have cards, articles, e-mails, calls from men and women, young and old, hurting for me too - knowing what a loss that unconditional love is in one's life. I have met new people that have gone through the loss and are so there for me and I feel a new kinship with strangers. I have even received the coolest black velvet canvas drawing by Astro's dogwalker that has beautiful purple heart jewels to make up his color. His mouth and face actually jump out at you at night as the reflection of the white outlining on the black creates that 3D effect. The black light didn't exactly work - just dim lights and candlelight and it's just such a great piece of art. And WHAT a fabulous subject she had to work with if I say so myself!

To love an animal is more than one can deserve in this lifetime I believe by what they give to you - and what they keep giving when they leave. The sense of importance they give to you is amazing ... and when they are gone you are left with you. Just plain you. That's what hurts. Knowing that you are not needed is one of the hardest things a human can experience.

Cats on the other hand don't really need you, they put up with your tardiness for their dinner and cleaning out their catbox...and don't russle up the sheets just as they get good and comfy or they WILL have to hurt you. But it's JUST a love scratch to tell you "hey, this is my territory, bug off until I need you again!" No, kitties are delicious and I can't live without mine now more than ever. I did have to get Rescue Remedy to put in their water as they are getting very aggressive now that Astro is out of the picture and the house seems bigger and more theirs. I believe they are grieving in their own special way. They are 16+ and 10+. That really blew my mind when I was reviewing pet records in the hospitals and noticed that Mootzie was 16+ and Mali was already 10! She's just like a kitten still! It's so wild.

I am blessed to have longevity in my animals, but I don't know how much more pain I can stand with my loss. I know others can relate, but it just seems so damned personal. So hurtful to have your best friend taken from you ... with your approval to give them the shot that relieves the torture and any pain they may feel in this life. I wish us humans could have that relief too.

I guess that's not what life is about though. It's about making it through the struggles, the pain, the grief, the loss, the hardships to appreciate the love, the kindnesses, the fun, the memories, the laughter and the lazy days of lying next to your best friend. Oh, I did say lying NEXT to him...we were equals you know. He definitely did not like the bed - TOO HOT for a Newfie/Lab. He was my big man that liked to rough the cold and the hard floor ... altho he did like this last bed I got him from Costco. He inherited a 12 year old Lab's bed he had all his life and then got to enjoy it for about 10 years before Mootzie peed all over it this summer and I had to toss it.

Somehow... I knew...the day I threw the bed out that the end was near. Call it superstition, call it a mother's intuition...I know that something happened that day that told me to love on him alot. Plus the cat really ticked me off and made me realize that life goes on. She didn't want him in her territory no more than he wanted her in his. Cats are cats and dogs are dogs. Isn't their life simple and defined nicely. They get along but know who they are - always.

More on my boy and the beauty of the beasts.

My heart goes out to all who have lost or may soon lose their beloved pets. Hug on them everyday if it is near the end and love on their memories if they have passed.

They feel us on Rainbow Bridge ... I have to believe that.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Shedding new light on dogs and cats

Yes, you've probably all seen this one in your mailbox... but it's so cute why not share it or read it again?

How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change A Light Bulb?

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.

Dachshund: You trying to be funny? You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler: Make me.

Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!

German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I didn't know the lights were out.

Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, it's right there...straight ahead!

Greyhound: If it isn't moving, who cares?

Australian Shepherd: Well, first we need to put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

The Cat's Answer: "Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is: How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?"

ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Cat and Dog Diaries

EXCERPTS FROM A DOG'S DAILY DIARY:

8:00 a.m.Oh, boy! My favorite!

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DAILY DIARY:

Day 183 of My Captivity: My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another house plant. Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair, must try this on their bed. Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was. Hmmm, not working according to plan. There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More importantly, I overheard that my confinement was due to my power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage. I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant, he speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the high metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time.

Everything pawsitive about animals...

Gandhi Knew

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the
way its animals are treated."

Mahatma Gandhi

Everything pawsitive about animals...

Mallie's Cries...

are full of love for me. If authentic, it would shed light on the question, "Where did pets come from?"

And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me everyday. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."

And G~d said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in
spite of yourself."

And G~d created a new animal to be a companion for Adam.

And it was a good animal.

And G~d was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged its tail.

And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And G~d said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and Eve and loved them.

And Adam was comforted.

And G~d was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility."

And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know he is not worthy of adoration."

And G~d created CAT to be a companion for Adam.

And CAT would not obey Adam.

And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being.

And Adam learned humility.

And G~d was pleased.

And Adam was greatly improved.

And CAT did not care one way or the other.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

I am Your Dog

Ode to a dear friend ...

I AM YOUR DOG

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle. You smile at me; I see love in your eyes.

What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a simple moment of your time? That is all I ask.

To slow down, if even for a few minutes to be with me. So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of others of my kind, passing.

Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land.

I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just "one more day" with me.

Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have NOW, together. So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as "alpha"or as "trainer" or even "Mom or Dad," come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's eyes, and talk.

I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general. You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with. Someone very different from you, and here I am. I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think of you as a "dog on two feet" -- I know what you are. You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now, come sit with me, on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears. Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self. We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

To the Rescue...

Everyone knows how many cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, horses, etc. are euthenized every year in Los Angeles due to the problems of overpopulation and neglect, as well as one of the worst run Animal Services Departments in the nation. One of the worst because of the "pay to play" antics of our current Mayor Hahn. At least that's what it appears to be. If it is not, PLEASE show us. Show us how you "see the light". Is it because of the endless, tireless efforts of several animal groups that lighted at your doors ceaselessly to give animals a voice, or did you just have a brain seizure into sanity? Or, are you feeling your voting base flounder?

In any case, there now lies ahead a new opportunity for a new General Manager of Animal Services for the City of Los Angeles. Applications welcome. Who could/would apply that makes sense? Job description is to "turn LA into a low-kill/no-kill city by 2008 and be the PREMIER animal services department in the country!!! RA, RA, RA!! I FEEL the love ... and the exaggeration a bit on their parts. Spin Doctor must have been in instead of Dr. Doolittle that day in the Department.

I looked at it and asked myself "do you have the qualifications to do this?" Not specifically, but I know how much of my life has been devoted to helping animals and I wonder if they consider that "field training" or "life experience" transferable to their needs. The salary is nice. I am willing to work 7 days a week for animals ... but the politics - yuk! I used to work in politics as a journalist ... must say that was a REAL zoo 'cept the animals there got to roam free and run our lives too!

I may send out that resume. Hmmmm, last 5 jobs and salaries in "public administration, management, or animal services, etc." I can spin with the best of 'em, but what the heck. Let's see when my rejection letter arrives and what they state.

I do KNOW people and people that KNOW people that could get me in up higher along the resume pile. But... what would I do when I have to see the horrors of the shelters, those beautiful faces peering through the bars begging for a chance, an opportunity for ME, ME to look their way and just maybe bail them out.

God love them.

God bless the new GM of Los Angeles Animal Services!
Everything pawsitive about animals...

On Being Charm ... and Shelly

Sunday was one of the most glorious days I have seen in a loooong time in LA. Picture perfect weather as I drove to the stables in Atwater to see Mr. Charm. THE most gorgeous bay Thoroughbred you can imagine. A glistening, flat coat like a certain dog breed that I just can't recall the name of right now. A pit or hairless chihuaha, I don't know. The coat was so flat with almost an oil base to it so that your hand glides effortlessly over his defined musculature. And to hear he is 13 - insane! He looks like a youngster! He moves with such dynamism, confidence and at the same time he is sooooo laid back. He always wants to kiss your face and just KNOWS that carrots follow an interlude with momma. Momma (Kelli) lovingly nudges her boy and he loves her caresses and kisses. They are such a pair to watch. He knows on Saturdays he gets to run through Griffith Park up and down the hills slowing only for blind corners, free to be who he was bred to be - a runner. His nature is to love and be outdoors, plain and simple. There are no pretenses with Charm. He's his own man, confident and self assured enough to give and receive love. Where is MY Mr. Charm in real life? Oh well, that's ANOTHER blog.

I was fortunate to get on his back and walk around the arena as one year had passed since I rode and I wanted to be able to walk the rest of the week.

A dear friend Shelly died that morning and I found out while brushing Charm. The security of being with a horse was so perfect at that time. My life was spent on horses and they helped me through the uncertainties of childhood and many difficulties in my personal life growing up.

It was a shock to hear about Shelly although we knew his time was coming as his cancer had spread and it was only time.

Such similar beings Shelly and Charm. They are bigger than life and FULL of life, laughter and love of people. Both have the courage to run and know when to stop. They stand out in the crowd and people take notice. I knew that riding Charm on such a gorgeous day was something that Shelly would want me to do in his honor. I did so with purposeful thoughts about Shelly the whole time. I wanted Shelly to feel my joy of freedom on earth at the same time he was enjoying his on the next plane

Wherever Shelly is, he is free like Charm when he is at a gallop. His hair is blowing in the eternal winds of a beautiful place beyond our comprehension. He is so loved, just like Charm is by his momma. All is good in the world when you see the similarity between a man and a horse.

I guess that's why cowboys are who they are. But that's another story.
Everything pawsitive about animals...

Wonders of the Woof...

Grass and muscle tendons. Yup, grass and muscle tendons go GREAT together for Astro's liking. GROSS ME OUT!!! Doesn't he know what it is? Oops I forgot! Astro's Appetizing Adventures!!!! A day without gross stuff is a day bad for my dawg. He went after a few kleenexes and doggie poop yesterday so he was satiated there. (double gross) Mostly eating grass these days to soothe the tummie ... and barf all over my house. Hasn't graced the new house with that yet though, hmmmmmm... the countdown is on. I am about to buy a 6 x 9 carpet so it's not so difficult for him to get up as the arthritis and age are getting to his 91 pounds (down 10 from last year, now at age 14) But I KNOW, I KNOW as soon as I bring that puppy (rug) in here that he will barf all over it. Oh kvell, what's a mother to do? It's funny these wood floors I thought would be so cool actually show SOOOOOOO much hair and his slobber (a Newfie/lab mix DOES do both very well you know).

The kittie sisters on the other hand will LOVE the jute and probably sharpen their claws in no time on that rug. So WHY buy it I ask? WHY? Because it's beautiful and it will help "pull the living room together" or that I just like to suffer and watch nature take it's course through my dog's gastronomic adventures and my cat's loving destructive ways? Who cares at this point. Their my BABIES dahlin' and I jist LOVE THEM! Forgot to mention, AHM from Texas and I sometimes even write with a drawl dahlin'. It's just a southeren thang hun.

A couple walked by Pier 1, the home still of my new rug to be, and they had a huge black "thing" on an expando leash. I couldn't tell if Mastiff, Staf or what. It was tres muscular and cool looking. I ran thru the wicker to get to see it and all I saw were his guardian's butts, not his/hers. Thought I could make a new friend.

Mrs. Bird is at it STILL. Those eggs are trying to get warm enough in our 80 degree heat but I guess they need oven temperature to pop open. I can't wait to hear the chirping of her darling lil ones when it occurs. You know her orange chested husband up and left her after they finished the nest. Typical polygimist he was. Probably flew to Utah where his other "chicks" were. I always say "Hello Mrs. Bird" when I go in out the back door as the door sort of rocks her nest. Her front door is facing me as I come out and she shifts tail to door then head to door I guess to evenly cook the babies. Her diligence and devotion blow my mind. I just WISH I could commit to SOMETHING in my life like she is. I have with my animals and that's beautiful, but I am so used to it it just seems normal. But passion, true passion and determination, that's Mrs. Bird. I swear she is teaching me great lessons now about how sitting around the house may produce results. Hopefully it will with the new job I plan to accept tomorrow which would include working out of the house dialing for dollars.

Mallie could not sleep last night as I just didn't want her curled under my chin.
Mootzie can ALWAYS sleep as that means she gets to wake up and EAT more! Boy are they polars - bulimic and anorexic my two girls. They both have good figures don't get me wrong, it's just that well, keeping the food schedules and stuff in order is getting to be a bit much. Also stepping in a bit of barf occassionally is not all that fun.

DID YOU THINK I WOULD BE WRITING ABOUT BARF SO SOON INTO THIS DEAL? I sure didn't. SORRY about that.

Next subject.

I need to go rollerblade and see butterflies and the birds at the wildlife preserve now before dusk. I haven't bladed in quite some time but I just finished some Indian food and had to let it settle before bladin' on.

Catch ya on the flop. ... for those youngsters that was CB talk back in the good 'ole 70s. Gosh, 70s, now THAT was a scary decade. Do NOT look at clothes you wore then. DO NOT I am warning you - they are scary.

No animal news of note other than I am inundated with Animal Welfare messages about such hard working groups such as Last Chance for Animals, ADLA, SHARK and IAKAKAPS who do such amazing, hardcore work in the legislature, against the City of LA dopes at Animal Control that can't get what needs to be corrected, against Rodeo, etc. abusers including helping the Baylor Bears get better conditions (that goodness to them Waco is my hometown and the treatment of the Bears was appalling to say the least) and finally a group that fights the Korean Government to prevent the eating and mass killing of cats and dogs for human consumption for aphrodisiac qualities. I get so many Viagra e-mails I should re-direct to Korea and tell them to get a grip and take their blue pills and save the time and trouble of farming animals if they are so hung up on getting laid.

Mallie just drooled on my arm for the last time during this e-mail so I am done with it so I am off to blade.

Check out those groups above - they do GREAT work.

Oh check out Aussie Rescue, my friend Linda in Ventura has saved TONS of Aussie's and is a blessing to the animal world. She has been a dear friend too. She has Linda's Paws and Claws there that is a holistic pet store so CHECK THEM OUT in Ventura. Why wait? The animals need me...you, all of us to talk more about them to help improve the quality of their dear lives.

I am blessed to know Stuart Rosen, creator of www.gurustu.com a wonderfully insprirational site for personal growth. ALSO a major animal lover himself. He so believes in the spirit and love of creatures that he has ignored a severe allergy to cats to allow a beautiful kitty into his world for the last 9 years. He bathes him, puts dander free powders and "stuff" on him so they can live in harmony. And it works! So when someone says they are allergic, think about the power of "pawsitive thought" as synergy between beast and man can occur against all odds.

This blog is devoted to my love of animals and their importance in our world. It is also a place to acknowledge those that rescue. It is also a place for petlore, health tips, ideas, urgent news and amazing animal/human stories that show the real bond between the two so different, yet so similar creatures.

Pets like cats, birds, dogs, hamsters, fish and more come into our homes and hearts and change us forever. Nature is empty without the lullaby of birds, the dance of the butterfly, the strength of elephants, the speed of a cheetah, the curiosity of a bear, the majesty of a horse running, a cow peacefully grazing or a simple rodent crossing the street. I have always felt strange when I am somewhere where I cannot see or hear or touch an animal. It feels lonely almost as their quiet presence comforts me, especially in my darkest hours.

That is the true beauty of God's creatures - what they bring to our world through our senses. We see them and it brings joy to our hearts. We feel their soft coats and touch their tiny paws and know that we are connecting with nature, or God if you like, on a different level, a non-verbal one. A direct hit to the Big Guy in the sky (Although I do not believe in an anthropormorphic version of a Higher Power, I do sometimes refer to God as the Big Guy!)

Mallie my littlest girl kitty is in my lap loudly purring and drooling (of course!) She was thrown out in the garbage on her first day of life in a baggie with her two siblings. She meowed so loudly someone going to throw out their trash thought it was a human baby, jumped into the dumpster and fished them out. She has NEVER stopped yelling since then unfortunately. Actually it's a cry of happiness everyday from when she wakes up to when she curls up under my chin to go to sleep. Please do not try to prevent her from that place either as she will toss and turn and push and shove her way into there all night. I just surrender and let it be as I can't compete. I do need my sleep sometimes! She was bottle fed and held in the crook of someone's arm and was allowed to suckle on their forarm. It drives me crazy as she always wants to lick your arm, but she is too, too cute still. She would allow you to put her in any position, hence, Mallie for Maleable Kitty. Everyday she wakes up jumping up, crying, walking all over me so glad it's morning, so glad's it's a new day - ALWAYS, ALWAYS HAPPY! How can I ever compete? And should I? I believe she relishes everyday she was given out of that dumpster. When I was called by a friend when she was 7 months old and told "there is a little girl that we KNOW you need, she is like you and you HAVE to see her" I thought they were nuts. I have two other cats in a one bedroom condo. Are they KIDDING??? I fell for it. Then months later we had the earthquake and that day she went into heat and the crying and meowing. Oye! Was that a nightmare. Later I inherited my 120+ dog from my ex-boyfriend who's apartment had blown up in the quake. Well that's a WHOLE other blog. And it's really interesting about the psychic connection between myself and my 'mules, as I call them.

I know that I was blessed to know animals and they rescued me growing up. Again, ANOTHER blog, but they truly did. And I owe a lifelong debt of gratitude to them for that.

News: There's a new mobile spay/neuter van in LA started by a group that is connected to some television show I believe. I will include the specifics later. With over 70,000 animals being put down in our LA shelters alone per year, this is very needed. Let's write them a note (when I have the info) and let others know about them so more unwanted pets can be prevented. Prevention IS the key to successful integration of humans and pets in the Big City.

Well my first blog comes to an end. But the story has just begun. The story of a city (LA) that is TRULY no-kill, with children and families educated about the importance of spaying and neutering and treating animals with kindness, respect and care. An environment where the wild beasts can roam safely and have plenty to eat amongst the ever expanding housing starts. Also, I dream of senior facilities full of roaming pets to keep our older citizens happy and loved during their later years when family and friends may be few. All of this can happen.

I have a dream ... do you?

Best wishes from Astro, Mootzi and Mallie

P.S.

Look for 'Mallie's Musings', 'Mootzie's Messages from the Cat Within' and 'Astro's Appetizing Adventures' (hold on to your stomachs for these as they have been quite outrageous through the years!).

Suggestions, comments and links are greatly appreciated to make this another great source for the animal lover.
Everything pawsitive about animals...
